National Basketball Players Association and currently heads the
Center for Sports Management at Seton Hall University. He played a pivotal role in the revitalization and advancement of the National Basketball Association. Mr. Grantham helped establish the NBA’s four historic collective bargaining agreements between 1980 and 1995, instituted the first rookie
orientation program in professional sports to help prepare players and their families for life in the NBA, created an agent regulatory system in response to the excessive fees charged to players by agents since 1970’s, developed labor agreements on behalf of players and so much more. Maya Dodson

No one really understands what it is like to be a black student-athlete. The good and the bad. At the end of the day, I’m a black woman before I’m an athlete. Anything that is happening to the black community is going to affect me as a person and through that, going to affect me as a player. Sometimes people don’t realize the connection

Jordan Nixon

At age 19, on a full scholarship at Texas A&M, one of the best schools in the country, I had enough money in my pocket to DoorDash too much for my own good. I had a clean, ventilated, two-bed, 2.5-bath apartment to call home after classes and time in the Aggies’ multimillion-dollar facilities. But while basking in the bliss of my blessings, on a night in October 2019, I pondered potential newspaper headlines about Jordan Nixon, A&M basketball player, being found unresponsive in her apartment. Self-harm, however it manifested itself, was a way for me to legitimize my concealed distress. I intended it to be an outward expression of the casualties of the war going on inside of my head. Admittedly, it was also a desperate countermove for the unrelenting numbness. I survived 100% of my worst days unharmed, and for that, I am proud.

Ashley Chevalier

I am sick of seeing all these colleges preach about mental health but do nothing proactive in protecting their athletes. Wearing t-shirts is not enough, hashtags are not enough, one talk about mental health a year is not enough. There needs to be a collective effort and programs available to help student athletes protect their minds.
