CHICAGO WHITE SOX – Public Relations Internship
Duration: January through October 2024
Compensation: $18/hour
The White Sox public relations intern is responsible for supporting the day-to-day functions of the organization’s public relations department, enhancing and building the image of the club with proactive media outreach and information dissemination. This candidate has a developed understanding of the Chicago market and sports media landscape and will assist in promoting and executing organizational announcements, community, multicultural and player-led initiatives, ballpark events, marketing campaigns, among other gameday duties.
Responsibilities:
Media Outreach
- Creating relationships with new and existing media members, outlets, and fans to secure local and non-traditional media coverage.
- Writing, editing, and distributing press materials, including creative pitch angles, advisories, releases, and b-roll packages related to upcoming events and marketing initiatives.
- Researching and updating targeted media lists for industries outside of sports
- Tracking media coverage and creating internal reports to share PR campaign successes.
Publications and Content Creation
- Researching, writing, and editing content for the Inside the White Sox blog, community and alumni newsletters, quarterly programs, media guide and other White Sox publications
- Developing background and info sheets for upcoming media opportunities surrounding White Sox Charities, player programs, youth baseball initiatives, multicultural activations and more
- Story mining by interviewing White Sox prospects, youth baseball players, recognized fans and other notable parties.
Gameday/Event Execution
- Assisting in the coordination of certain gameday elements at Guaranteed Rate Field (daily media, pregame media, batting practice, Sox surveyors, etc.) by communicating logistics, coordinating credentials, ROS and parking and serving as an escort to visitors
- Providing staffing support to escort members of the media in the ballpark as well as at outside PR events
The ideal candidate is interested in Chicago media with strong writing, interpersonal and professional skills, such as punctuality, productivity, and troubleshooting. Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule with a willingness to staff weekend gamedays and media opportunities. An enthusiasm for baseball and the sports industry is strongly preferred but is not necessarily a requirement. Candidates will enjoy the opportunity to thrive in a team-based environment, actively contributing their strengths to create a collaborative and successful work dynamic.
